excerpt: Dope As Food

So I set out to tell a story here, right? I wanted to start talking about being in love and being stuck outside of someplace with no money for the pay phone. I was that. I was parked outside of a Piggly-Wiggly with the great big trucks rolling back through the fog. Louisiana fog. It is thick as a blanket and you can hold it in your hand. No! Really, you can. Pick it up the way you might a snowball. Just that thick and heavy. Weird.

I would now except I'm a vampire here on a bloodlust run. I'm here because it is way past dinner time for me and my stomach is churning. I'm searching for the scent of dope and sniffing nothing in the air around me. The man I was supposed to meet is about 3 hours late. I know that because I was two hours early and this has all been one lousy fucking day. This is nothing like the night I had with the new girl I just met.

Her name is Tracee and she is pretty and soft and works a real good job. She is a nurse and I think that is perfect somehow. Me, always messed up on something and looking for medicine, her always handing it out to somebody, somewhere. A nice little symmetry there I think, don't you? Well sure. It will be something we can build on. I'm sure I probably will.

I'm swamped and drifting now. I'm waiting for a man.
